Canberra United W-league Head Coach
Canberra United have
announced that Heather Garriock has joined the club as Head Coach for
Season 10 of the Westfield W-League.
The former Matilda
of 15 years has spent the last three season’s coaching the Sydney
University Women’s Football Team, fostering one of the top female
football programs in the country while achieving enormous success in
the NSW Women’s NPL 1.
Garriock was
selected from a huge pool of talented candidates for the role, and
said the opportunity to coach the Westfield W-League’s most
successful club is humbling.
“I am obviously
humbled by the opportunity but I’m looking forward to coming to one
of the best clubs in the Westfield W-League in terms of facilities,
resources, personnel and structure,” she said.
“That was the main
drawcard, and it is probably the most elite team in the W-League, the
structure and resources, it is first class.”
Vastly qualified in
all areas of Football, Garriock’s coaching resume also includes
roles as Assistant Coach for both the Young Matildas and Westfield
Matildas national team, working with elite players at the highest
level of the game.
Garriock will take
on a side that won the 2016/17 Westfield W-League Premiership and
made it to the semi-finals, and is looking forward to continuing that
success in Season 10.
“One of my
strengths is my winning mentality and continuing to be successful on
the back of the great coaches who have coached United in the past,”
Garriock said.
With United widely
known for one of the best fan bases in the league, the former Sydney
FC and Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder admitted that the culture
and atmosphere of the club drew her to Canberra.
“When I think of
Canberra United family is what comes to mind,” she said.
“I think of fans,
the team, the players, everything reverts back to family and engaging
in that, so it’s very exciting.”
“For me family is
the most important thing, I am a Mum with two kids and a husband.
Family was a big drawcard.”
